Who will take responsibility if the threat to “storm JNU” and kill students is carried out?

One Amit Jani has received considerable media attention with his threats to JNU students, promising a ‘shoot-out’ if JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar and Umar Khalid, do not meet the ‘deadline’ he has given for them to leave campus.
Almost immediately as this came to the attention of the JNU community, students and teachers took steps to bring this threat to the attention of Facebook, where the threat was initially posted; of Delhi Police and of JNU Administration.
These steps are listed below, so that later, nobody should be able to say We Did Not Know. The media, which covers every petty letter written to the police by ABVP with great alacrity, has not seen fit to recognize the steps being taken by an increasingly anxious JNU community over clear and specific threats to the life of our students, and indeed to everyone on JNU campus.
1. JNUSU wrote to the VC, bringing this time-bound threat to his attention. JNUSU also filed a complaint at the Vasant Kunj North Police Station to take appropriate action against those indulging in intimidation and threat to students. Students also met the SHO personally and requested him to take the issue seriously and file an FIR. A Complaint has also been sent to Commissioner of Police by JNUSU, with a copy of the complaint to LG and CM.
There has been no response from the police so far.
2. Umar Khalid filed a complaint against Amit Jani and asked for police protection. But no FIR has been filed.
3. A group of teachers too, filed a complaint with the Vasant Kunj Police Station.  Their letter said:

This is with reference to two news reports in leading dailies  dated Monday March 26, THE HINDU (on p.11) and the Times of India (p. 9). According to these reports, one AMIT JANI of the Uttar Pradesh Navnirman Sena has made a FACEBOOK post in which he has “threatened to storm the JNU campus and gun down” JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar and student Umar Khalid if they do not voluntarily leave the campus by March 31.

AMIT JANI has threatened to “finish off” the students quietly and without warning, for which they have the weapons if the students do not comply by March 31. He has further said he would like to accomplish this deed before Durgashtami.

As this is a very serious threat to the lives of two students, we urge you to take all possible immediate preventive action against AMIT JANI and his organisation, for issuing this open threat.  As concerned teachers in Jawaharlal Nehru University, we would like to know what action will be taken against such violent and life threatening cyber attacks which are also a further incitement to violence, as the post has already received 2000 likes,  according to the news reports.

This too, has received no response.

4. A complaint was also submitted electronically to Facebook. An official response was received from Facebook and the post has been taken down. However, Jani continues with impunity to address the media, claiming that men and arms have already entered JNU.

5. Finally, yesterday, on the 4th of April, the Vice President of JNUSU, Shehla Rashid, wrote the following letter to the VC, as JNUSU has not heard back from the Administration after their first letter sent on March 29, 2016:

To The VC, JNU.

Dear Sir,

Hope you are doing well. I’m writing to ask the status of the action taken by the University administration on the threats by one Mr. Amit Jani to “storm JNU campus and kill JNU students, Kanhaiya and Umar”.

I had submitted a letter with your office, dated 29th March, 2016 to initiate criminal proceedings against Mr. Amit Jani. Mr. Jani, the President of “UP Narnirman Sena” is not a nonentity and has contested MLA elections. He has earlier lived up to his promise of demolishing Mayawati’s statue. I think he’s someone we should take seriously. We have seen shootouts at schools and colleges in the USA, in Peshawar, at IISC, etc. Such things are not uncommon or unheard of. I’m quoting from a TOI report dated 27-03-2016:

In his post, which was written in Hindi with a picture of Kanhaiya attached, Jani wrote, “There are four days left for the ultimatum to leave Delhi by March 31. Tell me, countrymen. Are we ready to finish him (Kanhaiya) off after that? We have the boys and we have the weapons. We will do this quietly, without giving notice, so that he does not vanish like Owaisi and so that the police don’t intervene. I want to know if people support this cause, for which I am willing to go to jail. I swear on Maa Bhagwati, if I can’t organize a shootout at JNU then I will quit politics.”
In 2012, Jani had given a similar ultimatum to raze statues of former CM Mayawati. Since the state government did not oblige him, Jani had gone ahead and vandalized the statue.

I had also attached two newspaper clippings along with the letter that I submitted on 29-03-2016. After that, on the 31st of March, Amit Jani gave a statement to the effect that the guns and the men have already reached JNU. I quote:

Amit Jani, leader of the Meerut-based Uttar Pradesh Navnirman Sena (UPNS) who had threatened to gun down Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) president Kanhaiya Kumar and 28-year-old research scholar Umar Khalid, has claimed that 10 of his party workers, all JNU students, are “waiting for the right moment” to kill the two student leaders. He said his men had even managed to smuggle weapons into the campus and that the “deed” would be carried out during the Navratras.” [emphasis added]

I urge you to watch this video and provide the same to the police:

In this video, one can see that Jani is clearly saying that

“there will be a shootout in JNU, mess, hostel, library, etc. We don’t care about the law and whatever we have said is cast in stone and is not subject to any change.”

The JNUSU is worried about the safety of the members of the JNU community, including the students. We expect the administration to initiate police action to prevent any mishap. Specifically, we expect the JNU administration to file an FIR against Mr. Jani.

I expect to hear back from the JNU administration on this issue ASAP.

Warm Regards,

Shehla Rashid,
Vice-President, JNUSU

  1. There is more than enough evidence here to arrest this Amit Jani and his co-conspirators. The police are making their position clear by not acting.

  2. The awoved ‘non-violent’ and ‘nationalist’ students Union and its blatent actions are being supported and encouraged by the ruling Hindu fanatics. Police are their prime umbrella. The whole programme of threats and creating phobia is being systematically orchestrated by the powerful brahminical hegemonic system. How long will it last??!

  3. In today’s ET, there was a news item saying that the lawyer who organised beating and himself beat JNU students and teachers was welcomed in BJP HQs in New Delhi….This news must be publihsed through media , lectures , protest etc so that the dark reality comes out in bright glare for common men and women…..We must know the power of communication…

  4. Obviously, gang leaders of the ilk of Amit Jani, leader of Meerut-based Uttar Pradesh Navnirman Sena (UPNS) continue to enjoy impunity despite the shoot out threat publicly
issued against JNU student leaders and despite all claims to constitutionality, more characteristically by the ‘secular’ UP regime! How about demanding the Akhilesh Yadav’s UP government to intervene very urgently to bring to book the goons of Uttar Pradesh Navnirman Sena (UPNS) ?
