THREE MEN FACE IMMINENT EXECUTION: Urgent Action petition from Amnesty International

Two Sri Lankans and an Indian national convicted for the assassination of India’s former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, are facing imminent execution in Vellore prison in Tamil Nadu, India. This follows the rejection of their mercy petitions by the President of India. If carried out, these would be the first executions in India since 2004.

Murugan and Santhan, both 41, and Arivu alias Perarivalan, 37, were sentenced to death in January 1998 by a Special Anti-Terrorist Court on grounds of involvement in the assassination of India’s former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Their sentence was confirmed by the Supreme Court of India in May 1999. According to information received by Amnesty International and reports in the Indian media, their mercy petitions were rejected by the President in August 2011, following the advice of the Government of India.

The rest of the petition is available here. The petition opens in German, but you can use the option on the top right to change to English.

  1. Sounds like a damn good idea. The execution. What’s the problem? Rajiv was murdered by LTTE terrorists, and now these criminals will pay for it with their lives.

India saves money on their prison costs, hell gains a few more inmates. Its a win-win for everyone.

    1. Mango, have you been campaigning in this manner – seeking punishment for Sri lanka soldiers, for abuse of underage teens by Sri Lanka Army in Haiti?

  2. Dear Mango,

It is one of those moments when it is not clear if we should be proud of our belief in making space for almost all opinions or wish we did not have to. I do not know what to say to you if you find that you can with ease declare that human beings should be executed by the state. irrespective of what you think of Rajiv Gandhi, Murugan, Santhan, Arivu or the LTTE, NO ONE deserves to be killed by the state. Please do read up and decide for yourself what you think of all the literature that speaks against the death penalty. On this one, my stand is clear and that is why this petition is here more than anything else. The Death Penalty for anyone and for anything CANNOT be tolerated. For your information, I will not post any further comments that speak disrespectfully of human lives and glorify them being taken away by the state. To make space for that in the public sphere breaches my ethical boundaries and I am glad to have the opportunity to declare that to you so that you are duly informed, on this public forum.
