The Fight is Not Just About Better Pay: Solidarity with the Striking ASHA Workers of Kerala : TTCU

The Tamil Nadu Textile and Common Labour Union (TTCU) stands in solidarity with the ASHA workers of Kerala, whose strike has now entered its third week. As a women’s trade union we understand how difficult it is for women workers to step away from their responsibilities and take to the streets. It is never an easy decision, but one that becomes necessary when all other avenues to have their voices heard are exhausted.

ASHA workers are the backbone of community health, especially for low-income families. From ensuring safe pregnancies and immunizations to supporting palliative care and managing pandemic responses, their tireless efforts form the very foundation of public health. Yet, they continue to face low pay, delayed wages, and an overwhelming workload without adequate support.

Their fight is not just about better pay—it is about dignity and recognition for all women workers who remain invisible despite being central to community well-being.

We urge the Kerala government to engage with the ASHA workers in good faith, listen to their demands, and ensure they receive fair wages, timely payments, and a functional support system.

In solidarity,
Thivya Rakini
State President
