This essay pursues the question of how people shaped by multiple, overlapping civilizational strands, different histories, and different conceptions of the true and the good might learn to inhabit a common political world through the formation of civic dispositions. It is thus about a process of the formation of subjectivity animated by the need to inhabit a common political world.  In doing so, it explores the crossroads in a modern Indian city as an allegory of some of the problems and possibilities.

At the beginning, there was no chaos. People went about their quiet ways, across each other, sometimes meeting, sometimes not. Vehicles were few and paths were naturally chosen.
