We are deeply shocked and saddened by the death of Khurshid Anwar.

As activists committed to ending violence against women, we have been trying to ensure the due process of law and justice in relation to the allegations against Khurshid Anwar.

These allegations were being bandied about on social media, where a concerted campaign of intimidation and vilification was also going on  against the complainant.

It was clear to us that the rights of both parties were being violated through such irresponsible social media campaigns. We were therefore trying (in our different capacities – Kalyani as a member of the ISD Board and Kavita as an office-bearer of a national women’s organisation) to contact the complainant and make it possible for her to come forward, so that a proper investigation could be initiated.

We  deliberately held back from approaching the police or NCW without an explicit direction from the complainant. We also made sure not to breach the confidentiality of either the accused or complainant in any way.  We would like to emphasise that we did not circulate the complainant’s testimony and other materials about the case to anyone.

Khurshid Anwar’s untimely and shocking death, leaving behind so many unanswered questions, is a tragedy. Equally disturbing is the continued campaign of threats and insinuations against the complainant that is continuing on social media. We fear that this campaign will destroy any remaining possibility of resolution or closure to this painful issue.

We extend our deepest condolences to Khurshid Anwar’s friends, colleagues and family, and hope that his pioneering work in the cause of secularism and peace will live on as his true memorial.

महिलाओं के खिलाफ हिंसा के खात्मे के लिए प्रतिबद्ध कार्यकर्ता होने के नाते खुर्शीद अनवर के खिलाफ लगे आरोपों के सिलसिले में हम कानून और न्याय की मुनासिब प्रक्रिया को सुनिश्चित करवाने की कोशिश करते रहे।

ये आरोप सोशल मीडिया पर गैरजिम्मेदाराना बहसों में लगाए गए। वहीं शिकायतकर्ता के खिलाफ भी धमकी और चरित्र-हनन का सामूहिक अभियान चलाया जा रहा था।

हम जानते हैं कि सोशल मीडिया पर इस तरह के गैरजिम्मेदाराना अभियान से दोनों पक्षों के अधिकारों का उल्लंघन हुआ है। इसलिए हम दोनों [इन्स्टीच्यूट फॉर सोशल डेमोक्रेसी की बोर्ड सदस्य की हैसियत से कल्याणी और एक राष्ट्रीय स्तर के महिला संगठन की पदाधिकारी के बतौर कविता] ने शिकायतकर्ता से संपर्क करने की कोशिश की। हमने कोशिश की कि शिकायतकर्ता सामने आ सके जिससे समुचित जांच शुरु हो सके।

हम समझ-बूझ कर सीधे पुलिस या राष्ट्रीय महिला आयोग के पास नहीं गए क्योंकि हमारे पास इस मामले में शिकायतकर्ता के स्पष्ट निर्देश नहीं थे। हमने अभियुक्त और शिकायतकर्ता, दोनों की गोपनीयता का हर संभव तरीके से पूरा ध्यान रखा। हम स्पष्ट रूप से कहना चाहते हैं कि हमने शिकायतकर्ता की गवाही और मामले से जुड़े किसी भी अन्य तथ्य को किसी से साझा नहीं किया।

खुर्शीद अनवर की असामयिक एवं दुखद मृत्यु की त्रासदी अपने पीछे बहुतेरे अनुत्तरित सवाल छोड़ गई है। सोशल मीडिया पर शिकायतकर्ता के खिलाफ लगातार जारी धमकियाँ और खुसफुसाहटें भी उतनी ही व्यथित करने वाली हैं। हमें डर है कि इस तरह के अभियानों से इस त्रासद मामले के समाधान की बची-खुची संभावना भी नष्ट हो जाएगी।

हम खुर्शीद अनवर के मित्रों, सहयोगियों और परिवारजनों के दुख के प्रति गहरी संवेदना व्यक्त कराते हुए आशा करते हैं कि धर्मनिरपेक्षता और शांति के लिए किया गया उनका महत्वपूर्ण काम उनकी सच्ची स्मृति हो।
