From some recent CCTV footage it appears the police did try to engage with their antiquated rifles.
I am not sure this is the full version of the events.

Apropos Kishore, Shivam I too have heard on various ‘news’ fora that the police first attempted to engage them, 40 policemen no less, but were no match in terms of weaponry against two AK47 wielding gunmen. At which point they fell back and went to the stores to get out heavier machinery. I think its reasonable to assume that no one expects an assault with automated rifles on CST, so I’m a bit sketchy about hauling up the police in this way…I’m not sure what it achieves frankly…I mean on one hand people like us will constantly argue about not ratcheting up paranoia, and on the other to say why weren’t they prepared for something so outrageous, smacks a bit of running with the hares and hunting with the hounds innit?

Also in this news report she makes a big to-do about how lax our marine security is. Sure it is. But who imagines this sort of attack. We’re not at war for gods sake!: ‘Why aren’t we more paranoid?’ ‘Why are we not expecting Armageddon everyday?’ ‘We should be prepared every second for disaster to strike.’…well I don’t want to live like that, and its not going to make anyone safer….

It is a widely known that many police officers are issued rifles with only one magazine of bullets. In some instances they may not even be issued bullets.
This reflects the failure — by way of lack of anticipation, intelligence, and preparation — by the top brass of the railways. In any case, posting a few men wielding world war vintage guns in stations is hardly does anything to secure it.
Having said that, one should credit the photographer for having dared to have shot the pictures.
