An appeal to release three Pakistani fishermen imprisoned in India since 1999: Jatin Desai

Given below is the text of a letter sent yesterday by JATIN DESAI to the Indian foreign secretary

Shri Ranjan Mathai,
Foreign Secretary,
Ministry for External Affairs,
Government of India,
New Delhi -110001

Shri Ranjan Mathai ji,

Greetings from Pakistan-India Peoples’ Forum for Peace & Democracy (PIPFPD).

This is in regarding three Pakistani fishermen arrested in 1999 when their boat was destroyed in a cyclone and they strayed into Indian water. The Indian Coast Guard arrested few Pakistani fishermen including Nawaz Ali Jat, Usman Sachu son of Haji Ibrahim Jat, Zaman Jat son of Haji Jat and Usman Jat son of Ali Mohammad Jat.

Nawaz Ali passed away on September 8 2012 in Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad and his body was sent to Karachi, Pakistan on October 1 2012 by PIA’s Mumbai-Karachi flight. We believe, remaining 3 arrested Pakistani fishermen are in some prison of Gujarat and most probably in Rajkot as Nawaz was taken to Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad from Rajkot Prison.

The family members, Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum (PFF) and we are concerned about these 3 fishermen. As they are in Indian prison since 1999 we sincerely request you to look into the matter and see they are released and repatriated immediately.

We sincerely believe that all arrested Pakistani fishermen needs to be released unconditionally and immediately. In fact, the India-Pakistan Judicial Committee on Prisoners in August 2008 had unanimously recommended the unconditional release of all fishermen held by India and Pakistan. The contribution of Judicial Committee has been appreciated by both the government but unfortunately their recommendations are not implemented till date.

We hope you will use your good offices and see they are released sooner than later.

Thanking you,

Jatin Desai
Joint Secretary,

  1. hope he listens to your plea on behalf of the fishermen, Jatin. It is so unfair to have held them prisoners; someone should have had the sense to confirm the cyclone and release them.

  2. We request the Prime Minister of India to release all Pakistani fishermen . These are poor people . Their relatives in Pakistan are waiting for their return to their sweet homes. The Government of Pakistan and India play game over detaining fishermen of each other country. They do not feel the sentiments and feelings of these poor fishermen and their children. Pakistan is frequently releasing fishermen at regular intervals as can be perused from the media. However Indian government is reluctant to do so. It is requested that once for all this matter should be resolved.

  3. We appeal the prime minister of India to please issue order for release of all fishermen of Pakistan including my brother Mr. Rahmat Ullah Khan S/O Muhammad Nawaz Khan who is waiting for the fate of their release since December 4, 2010. They are probably at Keralla Central Jail. It is also requested that present condition of these fishermen may please be released through web and other media so that their children and families may become sure and satisfied regarding their health and life.
